I'm a 33 year old Scottish woman, trying to get my journal groove back. I'm a mum of three boys from teen to newborn, and work in healthcare but (thankfully) I'm on maternity leave just now. I mainly write about daily life, the struggles and highlights of attempting to adult and parent and be healthy as a highly strung, stressed over-thinker who doesn't like herself most of the time.

Wow, I sound fun.  Should I mention that there will be wine, gin and chocolate?

I was obsessed with my Livejournal back in the day - I started it back in 2003 and even though I've only dipped in and out of it in recent years, writing is still very much how I make sense of my life and my mind. That's why I'm trying to reignite that obsession I once had...though it's difficult with increasing grown up responsibilities and shrinking time of my own to put pen to paper fingers to keyboard.  But I know I need the chance to record snatches of life as it flies past, and an outlet for when my mental health takes a dive.

I swear and I like to write no-holds-barred.  I'm very liberal and support choice - be that choice of who you love, choice over your reproductive options, or just the freedom to chose what you're going to watch on telly tonight. I'm doing my Masters in weight management so I try to live healthily through fitness (like dancing and weight training, albeit on a very beginner level) and healthy eating, but more often than not find myself alone amongst the crumbs at the bottom of a packet of biscuits. I'm book obsessed (mainly literary fiction and never fantasy, chick-lit, or much sci-fi), love a good tv series (Mr Robot, Stranger Things, The Handmaid's Tale, OITNB, Top of the Lake and Homeland have been recent highlights), and sometimes I even get out to see friends.  Some or none of this may come out in my writing.

Along with a lack of time, I guess part of why I've lost touch with my journal has been my shrinking friends list.  It's hard to make time to update when it feels increasingly like you're just shouting into a void. So I'd love it if anyone out there who is in a similar place in life or who is into similar things would like to take a punt on my journal.  I wont promise a very active journal but I am going to try, and I'm also going to try and be a good friend in return.

It's a good job I've been with my husband for ten years, because I'd suck at filling out a dating profile.  Feel free to swipe left (or is it right...? I'm not on Tinder).
I completely forgot that today is Friday because I've spent the day playing Stardew Valley with** E.

** where "with" means he reminds me of the time in-game, points out the copper nodes and minerals in the mine, and gets super excited and yell-y about how many fish I've managed to catch with silver or gold star quality.

Dream Daddy successfully launched! I was excited because of it being a queer dating sim but I'm actually really pleased with the game. It's $15 and you can find the game on steam at the following link: [Dream Daddy: A Dad Dating Simulator on Steam].

The mini games caught me by surprise and since I don't play a lot of dating sims I don't know if they're a standard feature. Other wise it's cute and a lot of fun.

I actually feel really bad for Joseph. Even if he doesn't end up being the dad I romance in-game, I really hope things improve for him. D:
I still have to review Extra Virginity as well, but I actually liked that one, so it will take longer to compose….

One of the things I did get done yesterday between work, the ball game, and the Epic Sunburn, was finish a slim book of short stories called A City Equal to My Desire by James Sallis. This wasn’t a book that was recommended to me, which means I don’t have to feel bad about truly disliking it. I found it in a keyword search on the library website for books about ukuleles, and it has a short story called Ukulele And The World’s Pain, which admittedly was one of the better stories in the book despite still not being very good.

From what I can tell, he did pick the best story out of the book to develop into a novel, “Drive”, but it is very obviously unfinished in short-story form. Sallis has a couple of ongoing problems in the short story collection, one of which is that he tends to skip the vital information you need in order to know what the fuck is going on. And not in a “the blanks slowly get filled in” way, or in a “your imagination is more terrible” way (though there is a little of that) but just in a way where like…he says something that you understand to be vital to the story but which is missing context, then spends like a page describing the fucking diner someone’s sitting in, and by then any context forthcoming doesn’t get linked back. It’s like being in the middle of a paragraph when you hit the photo plates in an older book – yes the photos are very interesting thank you but I need to finish the thought you were sharing with me before I go back and look at them. I think maybe he thinks this is challenging the reader but it’s not, it’s just annoying and makes what are otherwise interesting premises totally opaque. I shouldn’t need to work this hard for a story about a hit man who decides not to kill a politician.

If the book had a more cohesive theme in terms of the stories, it might be more readable – he clearly enjoys building worlds and then doesn’t quite know what to do with them once he’s built them, so if this was an entire book of “weird and different worlds” ala Italo Calvino’s Invisible Cities, I would buy in more fully and I think he would have put a little more elbow in. But it’s not. It’s mostly “here’s a really interesting world and a person living in squalor in it does something while being in it”. Also he appears to be fascinated by describing things that are shaped like pi. And a lot of times it feels like he read a wikipedia article on something and wanted to share some knowledge, so he just kind of built a half-assed story around his wikiwander.

And all of this I would probably let go if say, it was something I was noticing in a fanfic writer, or someone who was just starting out, or someone I felt was genuinely trying to get a point across. But there’s this inexplicable sense of arrogance to the collection, a sort of smugness to it that in professional writers drives me up the goddamn wall. Stephen King sometimes falls into the same trap, where it feels like the author believes they don’t have to respect their readers because they are The Writer.

The thing about volumes of short stories is that you keep reading it because sometimes there is a real gem. And there are one or two good stories in the volume, but I don’t know if they’re worth the rest of it.

So my review I guess is mostly me being annoyed, but it boils down to “If you like short stories in the SFF Noir genre, give it a whirl, but if you’re bored with a story none of them get better, so feel free to skip to the next one.”

I am like….90% sure I’m going camping this Friday.

It depends a bit on the weather, but I’m mostly packed, I’ve cooked food that’s currently waiting in the freezer, and I have acquired the third Diane Mott Davidson book to read.

The plan is to leave work early, catch the train to the campground, camp overnight, and in the morning hike out to a different train station further down the line, about a seven-mile trek, to do a longer endurance test than last weekend’s. Then I’ll catch the train home around noon on Saturday.

If something goes wrong, I can catch an evening train home on Friday until eight o’clock, or starting in the morning at 5:30, with little to no exertion. It’s pretty low-risk and I’m well stocked. I don’t have a sleeping pad, but my backpack has a partial one built-in, and I have one arriving tomorrow (though it might be too bulky, we’ll see). And honestly in this heat, I might just sleep on top of my sleeping bag in any case.

Worst case scenario, the campground has heated, lockable shower cubicles with nice big floors. I’ve slept on worse.

Caaaaaaamping! *jazz hands*

I've been so busy, and so focused on spending my free-time-to-write on original projects, that I feel like I want to talk to people on Dreamwidth but don't really have anything to write a post about.

So let's start with the essentials, which is two friends who are currently in need of a bit of help.

[personal profile] kuwdora, who makes amazing vids, is taking vid commissions to help pay for a career development opportunity.

...and it seems the other friend has reached their financial goal for the thing they needed, which I saw halfway through writing this entry, so. Please consider helping out kuwdora!

*

I'm busy planning London things (when I'm not busy doing other things). I've bought contact lenses for the first time in my life (putting them in and out is AWFUL but having them in is pretty wonderful). I finished watching "The Handmaid's Tale" and the "Game of Thrones" premiere and feel weirdly similarly about both.

Sunday was picking up my contacts and hunting for a birthday gift for a friend and getting stuff from the pharmacy and overall I got home from work around 8:30pm. Monday was pilates at 5pm, followed by my roommate's friends coming over at 9pm for Game of Thrones. Tuesday was going to buy new walking shoes (mine have holes in them and I need something for London), and because I needed a specialized store I yet again came home at like 9pm.

Today is going to be swimming (because my pilates class was canceled), followed by an optometrist appointment.

Basically just really, really long days. I've mostly been spending my weekends doing fuck all because of it, lol.

Anyway, I'm looking for ideas for what to do in London. So far I have the staples (places I've been and can always happily spend time in):
- british museum
- V & A

Potentially interesting but also maybe kind of boring (I have a friend who'd LOVE both of these but for me they're kind of "oh ok" sort of options):
- tour of parliament
- tour of buckingham palace

plays (I have to pick one):
- Matilda in the west end
- Much Ado About Nothing at the globe
- Queen Anne at heymarket (I do love Romola Garai)

Other than that I have: walking around various parks. LOL.

There's definitely loads more to do in London, but I feel like I've done the more obvious touristy stuff (Sherlock Holmes house, the eye, transport museum (LOL I know this is less obviously touristy, but I liked it)) and the less obvious stuff I'm not familiar with?

(I've always wanted to do the loo tour, ever since meeting the owner/tourguide at a party, but it seems every time I'm in London the times don't work out ;_;)

Anyway, suggestions for stuff to do are very welcome!

Subscription/Access Policy: Friend away! I'm always looking for new friends to talk to. As for access, I grant almost everyone that subscribes to me. If I ever lock something it'll be something really personal and might be trigger-y. I will always warn if I do post something of that nature. There's no pressure to grant me access back.

Fannish Interests: Gosh, okay, I like a lot of things. But I also need to catch up on a lot of things. That's my problem.

I watch a lot of tv. Right now I'm watching shadowhunters and deciding if I want to catch up on Teen Wolf or not. My love for Scott McCall is enternal though.

I really enjoy pokemon,  digimon,  yugioh,  sailor moon, power rangers, tf&f series, harry potter, kingdom hearts, and classic spn. all of those were my fandoms before I ever knew what fandom meant. i am casually into new doctor who but Ten was my first doctor and my favorite era. I'm always there for the companions the most though and I love bill potts so much. i love sherlock holmes adaptations but i gotta say my favorite is elementary. i'm also into low energy video games so pretty much anything nintendo and the sims. I'm a little obsessed with the sims and the fandom it has on youtube. just a little. Superheroes are cool too! I like the mcu and dcu but i haven't watched all of it yet bc reasons. Omg star wars is a big one lately too. and the new Star Trek and hopefully the new series!! as for cartoons steven universe is like the best thing that ever happened to me probably. aaaand books!! gosh do i hope to actually start to read books. The last full thing I read that wasn't fanfiction was the hunger games.

sp in summary i love anything cheesy, ridiculous, and about friendship :D

I Like To Post About: honestly? cute animals. cats especially. no but i'll post about all the things i care about and I might to do reaction posts to show or movie etc. I hope to at least post fic or a rec or just journaling in general! I'm trying to find my place in dreamwidth after being on tumblr for so long now.

About Me/Other Info: I'm an ace nonbinary (she/they pronouns) lesbian. I'm autistic, mentally ill, and have chronic pain & illness. I'm infp, capricorn, and a hufflepuff.

hurt/comfort is my whole life. It's like my one true kink. I love reading it, writing it, having discussions about it, reading meta about, you get it. It's my jam.

I'll mostly comment on stuff for a while probably. I have a strict rule that is if I see an entry/read a fic/etc I comment on it. <3

Describe yourself in five sentences or less: I'm fairly new here, but not new to fandom. I write fanfiction and I fandom-hop without rhyme or reason. I'm currently in a lot of small fandoms, and I love to add more, so feel free to try to get me obsessed with your favorite fandom. IRL, I'm a sleep scientist who doesn't sleep enough. I talk about my girlfriend a lot.

Top 5 Fandoms:
I'm going to cheat, but in my defense, I am in so many fandoms...
Small video game fandoms (Oxenfree, Stardew Valley, and Primordia)
Boku No Hero Academia
The Goblin Emperor
Harry Potter (always... never hop away from this one)
Haikyuu!!

I mostly post about: Fanfiction, logic puzzles, fandom things. I'll probably start posting about my life at some point, but those won't be public

I rarely post about: politics, specifics about my work.

My last three posts were about: A logic puzzle and some fanfiction exchange/challenge stuff.

How often do you post?: Not much right now - I'm new here. But I imagine I'll be posting at least once every week, if not more.

How about commenting?: I'm good about commenting when I'm feeling social, but sometimes I don't have the energy. I like making friends and being friendly though, so I try.
Today I'm going to be sharing my most read fanfic authors with you. These are the authors that I consistently read new material from and whose stories I reread the most.

notbecauseofvictories
links: [AO3 profile] [tumblr]

I discovered notbecauseofvictories via Star Wars - specifically by stumbling across a reblogged post from her poverty-line midwest AU [tumblr tag link]. Her Star Wars stories are my favorite and the easiest for me to fall in love with because of my long love affair with Star Wars itself but I've also enjoyed her story wild peaches [AO3 link], featuring Sarah after her encounter with the Goblin King in the Labyrinth, and Short Street to Kicklebury [AO3 link], a short and sweet story of the Understanding and marriage of Sybil Ramkin and Samantha "Sam" Vimes.

ink-splotch / dirgewithoutmusic
links: [AO3 profile] [tumblr]

Ink-splotch came onto my radar via their original writing as E. Jade Lomax and their series Leagues and Legends [author website link], the story of Jack Farris and his friends and what it means to be a hero in a world where heroes aren't necessarily commonplace but are definitely well known. It actually took me a while to get around to reading about Jack but, in the meantime, I did read many of ink-splotch's Harry Potter stories! My favorite is the series we must unite inside her walls or we'll crumble from within [AO3 link], which features stories of the ladies of Hogwarts - Cho Chang, Hannah Abbott, Parvati Patil, Ginny Weasley, Pansy Parkinson, Andromeda Tonks, Susan Bones, and Luna Lovegood.

lalaietha
links: [AO3 profile]

Lalaietha is one of my favorite MCU authors; I love the way they write each character's perspective - Clint, in particular. Their writing has a beautiful flow to it and it's so easy to get lost in and I'm always excited to click the link for the next chapter. It's wonderful. My favorite series to link to people is Ten Thousand Things [AO3 link], which is all of Lalaietha's A:TLA stories. The depiction of Katara, Zuko, and Mai's relationship is superb.

scifigrl47
links: [AO3 profile] [tumblr]

There's nothing for the itch of found families quite like Scifigrl's MCU stories. Bringing us the wackiness of the Toasterverse [AO3 link] and the lovable hijinks of DJ Stark in Tales of the Bots [AO3 link], Scifigrl will have you smiling and crying before the story is over. What I love best about her writing is the characterization of everyone in the story and how their interactions feel natural.

copperbadge
links: [AO3 profile] [tumblr]

Copperbadge has a knack for steamy romance in loving, respectful relationships and some of the best characterization I've ever seen - no matter what AU you drop him into his Tony will always be Tony. His White Collar stories [AO3 link] are particularly good for steamy romance and The Foodieverse [AO3 link], in conjunction with Scifigrl47, is fun and interesting even if you're not a foodie. Copperbadge has so many AUs going on and is so prolific as a writer and I have no idea how he manages it but it's beautiful and I don't care.

That's a wrap for the list and thank you for your time! If you find a story by anyone on this list let me know so I can squee with you! And if you have any recommendations for me feel free to share. Looking forward to hearing from you. ^-^

Spouse!C linked me to this; Jotun, "a hand-drawn action-exploration game set in Norse mythology," is free to download this weekend (and keep forever) from both Steam and GOG as part of a celebration and promotion for Thunder Lotus' new game Sundered, launching July 28th, 2017.

[a link to Jotun: Valhalla Edition's page on the Steam store website]

[a link to Jotun: Valhalla Edition's page on the GOG store website]

I haven't played the game before and I'm downloading it myself for the first time today; I've been lured in by the pretty art and the female protagonist and I think it's worth taking a shot in spite of the mixed reviews. It's free after all. What's the harm?
(When you totally space that it's Friday... did the trash get taken out!?)

I decided a few weeks ago that I wanted to have themed days where I could work on something specific that would further whatever goals I have. This started off with me putting "Fanart Fridays" on my Habitica as a weekly task because I'm trying to encourage myself to draw more often. If I want to be an artist, someone who can draw, I have to draw, right?

And I realized that this approach wouldn't work for me because I was making it too specific in regards to fandom - would I post fics on Thursday then? Recc list Mondays? I'm not a content generating machine! Ideas, yeah, sure... but actual content? Hahah, omg, no.

So I switched it up to Fanwork Friday and now I can post anything fandom related on one dedicated day a week! (Look, it makes sense in my brain, okay?)

Today is the official start of Fanwork Fridays and I'm going to start off easy with a simple recc list in my next post.

Describe yourself in five sentences or less: Aquarius, INFP, dog person, never completely outgrew my goth phase but sometimes wear pink. I write fanfics, mostly for exchanges. I like monsters and space. In the real, basic, practical, flesh-and-blood, real-world I am: female (she/her), Christian, bisexual, socialist-leaning, a teacher, and from the southern United States. I do not do well with excessive sunlight, pineapple, disparaging remarks about religion (any, including my own), or people trying to make others feel bad about things that make them happy.

Top 5 Fandoms:

- Doctor Who
- Avatar: The Last Airbender
- Like three anime in one interconnected pile (Steins;Gate, Puella Magi Madoka Magic & Fate)
- MCU
- ??? Carmilla? It really depends on the day. I love Wonder Woman right now.

I mostly post about: ... Dear Author Letters. So far. 95% of what I do on the internet is fandom-related. I hope to keep talking about fandom in a responsive, more connected community than tumblr has provided in years. I hope to rewatch some fandoms I've lost touch with soon, though I will be starting work in a few weeks. Fandom with a dash of my daily personal monologue.

I rarely post about: Political or religious stuff outside a positive context.

My last three posts were about: I'm writing a fandom autobiography to get in the habit of posting on my dreamwidth.

How often do you post?: It's hard to say since I'm new to this. Most days this week. If you want to check out how I sort of blog you can check my tumblr's blogging tag.

How about commenting?: I believe in commenting with my whole heart. I really want to establish some friendships and conversationships here. When it comes to fic, I won't promise I'll read everything, but if I read it, I will always comment.

A GIF to describe how your day has been so far: Really uneventful day, so here's a gif that shows my overall personality. (I overidentify with Carmilla oops.)

My parents signed me up for Nextdoor, which is like some kind of community-based mini facebook, and I am signed up in their neighborhood, which is (as we have established) The Boondocks.

I don’t mind belonging to their Nextdoor, it means that I will be kept abreast of local news, but also the local news is hilarious.

The latest messages concern a HEATED DISCUSSION about hoof trimming because someone posted asking if anyone knows a farrier who will trim miniature horse hooves, which apparently most farriers have some kind of BASELESS PREJUDICE against according to this poster. Battle lines are quickly being drawn between the various camps including:

Miniature horses don’t need hoof maintenance the way regular horses do
Miniature horses ABSOLUTELY need hoof maintenance you monsters
Farriers who won’t do miniature horse hooves ain’t shit
Farriers who won’t do miniature horse hooves have their reasons
Miniature horses are some bullshit
Everybody shut up about miniature horses
I Have A Miniature Horse For Sale

I can’t wait to see who wins. I suspect it will be me.

I just moved from tumblr/lj/wordpress, so I really want to connect with new people and feel welcome again :3
I just got home and the apartment REEKS of burnt toast. Which is weird since a) nothing is on fire (I checked), b) I haven’t even MADE toast in like a week, c) it didn’t smell like that this morning when I got home from running, and d) the smell is most intense when standing on my welcome mat just inside the door.

I think Ghost is mad at me. They often express themselves with smells near the doorway. But I haven’t even done anything! The designated Ghost Drawer in the card catalogue shelf (under G, for Ghost) is open and everything, I checked.

I cannot order you a pizza tonight, Ghost, I already have grocery delivery coming and I don’t want the Domino’s guy and the Peapod guy to make it awkward. We’ll have pizza on Thursday.

[tumblr.com profile] steverogersandhiscyborglovers linked to a survey by the Vatican, which is asking for information about the attitudes and values of 16-29 year olds of all faiths, worldwide; it's available in Italian, English, German, Spanish, French, and Portuguese. This is the first time the Vatican has put out an online survey and it's an opportunity to share your opinions with the church (even if the demographic gathering is a little limited; they only offer "male" and "female" options for gender). You can take the survey here.

And this has been Radio Free Monday! Thank you for your time. You can post items for my attention at the Radio Free Monday submissions form. If you're not sure how to proceed, here is a little more about what I do and how you can help (or ask for help!). If you're new to fundraising, you may want to check out my guide to fundraising here.
